At Clay By Nature Pottery I make My own glazes and have invested much care, time and effort in testing formulas to get the precise results that I want. I strive to make beautiful glazes that have a variety of color in them, to pull people in and get a closer look, and enjoy the variety of color.
In my sgraffito work, each item is hand drawn and hand painted and are carved by hand which create the uniqueness of each piece. I fire My sgraffito work in wood or soda kiln which adds another layer of shading that gives the drawings more depth and character. |

Pottery Design
Sgraffito Pottery: The word Sgraffito comes from the Italian word graffiare which means to scratch. It was popularized in 15th Century in Italy.
Each piece is lightly sketched out using a pencil. Next I fill in detail using underglazes. I then fill in around the drawing with black underglaze then scratch through the surface creating the leaf pattern and straight lines. Finally each of these pieces are fired in a wood or soda kiln that shade my fish and Luna Moth drawings. |
